This is one of the new "private" schools. I believe it is accredited and consequently graduates are eligible to take the National Dental Hygiene Certification exam and be licensed in the Province of Ontario. However, there have been many (I think close on a dozen) new private schools in the last few years and the market for dental hygienists in the Toronto area is pretty much saturated. You risk paying a lot of money for your education and then not being able to find regular work at the end of it. Most hygienists are currently working in 2 - 3 offices in order to achieve close to full time employment and this is without any benefits such as health, drug, sick pay, or pension.

I am having my dogs' teeth cleaned at the vet, and I would like to follow-up after that with a regular self-cleaning program for my dogs' teeth to help keep them clean. Recommendations of techniques and products would be greatly appreciated.

What is a good at-home dental hygiene program for dogs?
It is recommended that you get a toothbrush and doggie toothpaste, which is available at Walmart, Target, Petco or Petsmart. This should be done weekly if possible. Also, milk bones and chew toys help keep the plaque off the teeth, which helps tremendously. Some dogs are not into chew toys, but if yours is, then great! I bought this wonderful chew toy for my dog and it has bristles that actually clean his teeth, and he loves it. Thanks for being concerned about your dog's teeth! Alot of people don't and unfortunately this causes SO many health problems down the road. Good luck!
Reply:there are tons of products. obviously the toothbrushes and enzymatic toothpastes at pet stores. the big name in dental treats is greenies, but are pretty expensive- ones like nutrident are a close second. longer lasting bones like nylabone make dental varieties as well. and top of the list is to stay away from canned food! wet food is immeasurably horrible for a dog's dental health

Not sure who you met up with but my impression is they take more care over dental hygiene than those in the UK. They are really into flossing as well and that has not caught on so well here for a start.

F.Y.I. While it is true that you should NEVER look a gift horse in the mouth it is usually safe to look a gift pony in the mouth. Just make sure that while looking in its mouth no one sneaks up behind you and steals your holdall.

it took me years to get that expression - my mum said it all the time when i was little! I finally realised that the mouth of a horse is its worst asset so don't use there to assess how good it is. I don't think any horses have good teeth!

i am attending in the state of ga and i wanted to be sure that the exams we take here will be accepted in virginia, as we plan to move back after i graduate.

To be able to work in VA (or any state in the US) you first have to pass the written National Board, which's score is accepted nationwide. Just make sure when you apply online to take the exam you mark the states you want your results to be sent ( I believe you can mark 3 at no charge).

I want to go back to school full-time for dental hygiene. Running into some major issues- need help?

But two years without income is making this dream become a nightmare. Too many bills to pay and expenses keep climbing. I tried to cut back, but a run of bad luck has wiped that effort out.

I told hubby that this would be a two year program ONCE I GOT IN. He didn't hear the last part of my statement. But he did like the earnings potenital. I have been taking the prerequisits at night part-time. He thinks that this is all a waste of time and money. He also says that I grossly mislead him because two years have gone by and I have nothing to show for the money I've spent.

So my career change is not going very well from the supportive side either.

Two years full-time is the only way to get this certification. I have done some thourgh checking; anything else is a scam.

Is this wrong of me to keep trying if my hubby is not supportive and financially it be very hard (to say it nicely).

I am willing to work part-time to make ends meet but that might not be enough. HELP!

You need to be able to take the good with the bad here.

Make a list of pros and cons. While I would normally say go for it you only live once; I might also take in the fact that you have indicated a financial strain. True, this is your dream, but you must also take a long hard look at who else will be effected here; your spouse and kids.

List your facts honestly- see if your dream will end up bankrupting you. When you come up if a con- look for legitimate anwers to solve your delimma.

At the end of the day you need to be able to look at your acomplishments and be proud. If you decided that you are not able to financially support this career choice right now- then come up with a plan that will allow you to continue onward.

Getting your spouse on the same page with you will also help in your self confidence area. With his backing and a solid financial platform you should be good to go. With a shaky financial platform and your spouse not showing his support- there is no one to catch you.

Get yourself organized and ready to make your move- if it is now you will know. If not then do not make the jump until you are ready to take the swim.

Reply:I say stick to it, if its something you really want to do then go for it dont quit now because all that money spent would have been for nothing. Dental Hygiene is a really expensive thing compared to a lot of other health care courses, but you can probably get loans. And sometimes you cant just do it at night they want you to be fulltime. That really sucks but sometimes you just have to take the chance and go for it. Im sure you can do it.

I need opinions on retipped dental Hygiene instruments. Good Bad or otherwise?

I never used to do it with my instruments. I always tried to swing a deal with my sales rep (from Patterson, Schein or wherever) to bring in the Hu-Friedy or Premiere rep who would normally give me a great deal on instruments as needed. Premiere has been taking a big part of Hu-Friedy's business away in the past few years. They have agood product and will often make youa great deal. Push the sales reps - they can do "Buy x, get x Free" deals because they have gripstock provided from their compnay to make deals. A good deal doesn't have to be money off - it can be in free goods. For the money you spend in retipping, I always felt in the long run that new instruments were better. Just be sure your staff knows how to properly sharpen an instrument. Most instruments are ruined because of poor sharpening skills. Your Hu-Freidy or Premiere rep can show your staff how to sharpen properly as well.

Cadavers? No, I wouldn't think so. The dental hygienist program in my local area works on live humans. They run a dental clinic, and the students get some of their clinical experience through that. Other clinical experience is through local dental clinics. After looking Cypress' website regarding the program, you may have to OBSERVE anatomy of a cadaver, but i would doubt dissection. The school I went to only accepted 12-16 people a year, so getting in was very hard. Prereq's yes the regulars english, algebra, anatomy and physiology I and II, chem, biology, etc. Dental hygiene school was very difficult, but I went through an associate program so you do in 2 years what the bachelors program does in 3. No pay isn't different w/ an associate. If you plan to teach later or work for a company like Crest, etc then you might want bachelors degree. Hardest part was finding the right/dependable patients. Boards are very challenging.
Reply:I went and didn't find it that difficult to get in. Hopefully, you like and understand biology, and anatomy %26amp; physiology. Chemistry wasn't my favorite subject either, fortunately you don't need much of it anyway. Good luck.

Toothpaste and aspirin on the offending tooth for a cavity toothache. Works well, but can also damage/burn nerves if done too frequently.

Olive oil over/in cavity soothes and keeps out air.

Clove oil (can burn a little at first). Cloves in a pinch.

Pure Peppermint, Vanilla, or Almond Extract on the offending tooth or area (its the alcohol concentration) Extracts work remarkably well.

Whiskey/Bourbon/Scotch (brown liquor) directly on the offending tooth or area. Or, use as rinse, holdi over offending area, spit.

Turmeric (Tumeric) the spice and salt in warm water, swish, hold over offending area, spit.

Reply:Make an appointment first and foremost with your dentist. Get your teeth squared away as far as the tooth decay. Then follow the dentists instructions for caring for the gum disease. Also, after you've flossed and brushed your teeth, rinse with equal parts peroxide and water. Avoid alot of sugary foods, as well.

Reply:Dental hygiene school is rigorous and can be very difficult. It is not for everyone. That is why they have you take all the pre-reqs before they let you in. If you can excel at the pre-reqs and if you are accepted, you should be fine. By accepting you the school has decided that you are more than qualified (they turn away many qualified applicants every year) to be successful in their program. Also, the board exams are hard, but that is why you will spend a couple of weeks doing nothing but studying for them. But, most people pass these boards.

The good news is that it is worth it. You will not work weekends, nights, or holidays. You will make more money than most people. You will get to help others become healthier and have self-confidence.

I can't find the requirements for Pa, but here's a link to what Texas requires. Usually, you have to hold a valid license from another state to obtain a temporary license. When I moved to South Dakota, the requirements were very similar to those Texas requirements. Plus I had to pay a 250.00 fee for a temp. license. It doesn't sound like it's worth it to me.

You will have just completed years of intense training. Take a much needed break. Enjoy your summer !! I remember that I wanted to work right away too and was able to by August.

Hello I was wonder if you are a soda drinker? I know from personal experience that if you drink pop you must clean your teeth after word or the sugar %26amp; acid in it remain on your teeth almost all day even more so on your back teeth. so after eating or drinking anything try to risen out ur mouth with water or even wipe ur teeth off after woulds with a cloth if you can't bruse them every lillte bit helps when wanting to save ur teeth or give up drinking anything persweetened(pop,tea,coffee sweetened,lemonaides,etc.)Try using paste that are good for ur type of teeth and ask ur Dentist about it may you need a coating placed over your teeth to help them be portected.

Reply:Maybe you have a fluoride deficiency? Your dentist should know what is wrong anyway?! If it's about fluoride, he can paint your teeth with it and that helps.

Try another dentist...a second opinion won't hurt.

By the way, if you brush too hard, you take the enamel off and therefore expose the teeth to decay.

Get another opinion if the dentis you have doesn't know.

Reply:Sounds like bad genes, my nieces have that... the best that you can do is to drink lots of milk, and eat cheese, and other dairy products, OR take a calcium supplement, that MIGHT work...

The other part of this is, do you drink? Most people don't know that when they drink alcohol, that it leaches calcium from your body (including teeth and bones). Cut down on your drinking if that's the case, and stock up on the calcium! I recommend naturally, but if you're like one of my friends (lactose intolerant) you can't do that, so try a supplement...

Reply:Besides genes and diet, you could be overbrushing your teeth or brushing too hard, which can damage the protective enamel on your teeth. Without enamel, you will be more prone to cavities, even if you keep your teeth realy clean. You should ask your dentist if you have any erosion going on that may be playing a part in the cavities.

How can I get into Dental Hygiene program?

I hear that it's very tough. But I'm from China and the secondary education is totally different between in China and in North America(I'm immigrating to Canada but I guess it's similar in the US in education).

For example, I've seen a Maths college entrance exam paper of a college in Canada, and it was really easy, and I could get 100% correct. Does that mean I won't have any problem in Maths prerequisite?

I know I'll need English(I plan to take an adult high school course), Chemistry, and Biology, probably Physics as well.

Now I really want to know it, how tough are Chemistry, and Biology prequisites gonna be? I can't find any college entrance exam paper on Chemistry and Biology. Since people say these're tough and they spent sevral years to make it, then I think I should start now(I'm still in my mother country)

Can someone give me sevral examples of the TOUGHEST Chemistry and Biology prerequisite questions? Or examples of the test would be even better.

How can I get into Dental Hygiene program?
Canada and US are very different but the Canadian requirements are higher than US so if you can already get all the practice questions correct, you can avoid taking many pre-requisite classes. Many junior colleges offer Dental Hygiene in the US and several tech schools too. The tech schools here cost more and offer less doing it but, they are faster.

WLAC.EDU is a local Los Angeles college that offers Dental Hygiene. It will tell you the requirements on the website. Also, if you begin a class and find it too easy, you can 'challenge' it to skip it (with credit). It is pretty easy to do. I took some final exams in the first month of classes and passed so the departments let me skip the classes. No reason to sit in a class room to learn stuff you already know!

What can I expect in dental hygiene school?
If you actually have a school in your parts that specializes in dental hygiene, perhaps you could arrange for a week of hanging out and sitting in on classes and labs and see for yourself.

EVERY kind of college is going to be about ten times more hundred times more intense than the most similar kinds of classes you took in high school.

You can expect reading assignments to be about twenty times as long as anything you did in high school.

You can expect to have to do get at least five times more objectives accomplished per lab as you ever had to do in the same amount of time in a similar hogh school lab.

But, you won't be expected to take nearly as many classes per day (nor per week) so it doesn't actually wind up being as harsh on you in total.

Yes they use students as guinea pigs, but they also use the public who don't want to have to pay full dental prices for pretty much the exact same services. That's why I've been a dental school ginuea pig ever since I was a student in college.

I have NEVER actually had my teeth cleaned nearly as nicely at any dental office as I have had them cleaned in dental hygienist labs.

What can I expect in dental hygiene school?
5 days a week all day classes. Go home to study the 1,000 pages you have to read/study. Part of the stress comes from learning things that can't really be studied at home (exploring teeth, scaling teeth, probing teeth, anesthesia, etc.). Seeing patients that stress you out when they do not show up or cancel at last minute. This is hard to deal with because you only have a certain number of clinic days to get all your patients/requirements met. Writing a report or multiple reports while reading that 1.000 pages, etc. The biggest difficulties are if you have children b/c you do not have time to see them. And then there is boards, lets not start on that yet.

The job is great but very routine. Many people get burned out by doing the same thing day in and day out, but I love it. Great hours and pay. Great job once you are done with school.

altho, i am not a hygienist, i suffered along with my daughter as she attended school..... the girls did use each other as guinea pigs when learning to give injections and administer nitrous oxide...

i was one of her first patients... and it took her almost 8 hrs to finish my check up.... 6 months later it only took 4 hrs..everyone in our family got to be guinea pigs!!!!

A dentist goes to school way longer (usually 8 years) and is licensed to provide dental treatment (exams, give injections, fillings, root canals, crowns, bridges, dentures, veneers, etc...) and also write prescriptions. A dentist is a doctor. A hygienist goes to school for 2-4 years. A dental hygienist is licensed to clean teeth, do sealants, whitening, fluoride, deep cleanings, etc. A dental Hygienist works under a dentists supervision in the office. Some states also allow hygienist to give injections too. Basically, a dentist goes to school longer, has more responsibility, but makes WAY more money than a hygienist. I am a hygienist and I love it!

Dentists are doctors who go to dental school after receiving their bachelor's degrees, and usually study a total of at least seven years, and most specialize in a specific area of dentistry, although some specialize in general dentistry and do everything-fillings, root canals, oral surgery, implants, orthodontia (braces). Reply:I think you should definitely wear your hair up. It gives a more profesional appearance. You want to look mature and sophisticated. I also think that you should rethink the brown suit and wear a black suit. Black is the standard for school and professional interviews.

The "regular" toothpaste sold for pets really doesn't do much, as far as I can tell. But if you do want to use a traditional toothpaste, I think CET would be recommended over other brands like Petrodex. However, I *highly* recommend that you try PetzLife gel. It's very easy to use. You don't really need to brush your cat's teeth with it; you can just rub it into the cat's mouth with a finger brush or something. It's inexpensive, it *does* work, and it works fast. My cat's teeth and gums looked much better after about five weeks using the product as directed, and now I just use the gel a couple times a week to keep them that way.

Reply:Make sure you are feeding him hard food or at least some hard food, it helps w/ their teeth. The sell some treats that they say are for teeth and breathe, I'm not sure how well they help. They also sell toothbrush and paste for cats, which I have never used. The best bet is go to your vets or maybe a groomer and have the teeth professionally cleaned. I know that the vets can give them a sedative if they are really upset.
Reply:1. Brush his teeth daily, weekly or as often as you can manage. Use either a brush or dental wipes.

2. Add a dental supplement to the food or water.

3. Feed chicken necks.

4. Looking into Fragaria, a homeopathic remedy.

I have personally failed to brush my girls' teeth, so I rely on chicken necks to keep them clean. I did try the water supplement but because they don't drink much water it was rather pointless. (C.E.T. Dental)

I'm not using the food supplements either - the two I know of are Wysong's Dentatreat or PlaqueOff.

Reply:Maybe you should try using a Tooth Tunes toothbrush. It plays music while you brush your teeth (only your daughter can hear the song) and then applauds after two minutes or the recommended tooth brushing time. There are several different songs that you can buy. They are a little pricey (about $8) but have helped my 9 year old with brushing his teeth.
Reply:Get her one of those vibrating or rotating toothbrush. We've had a time getting my 16 month old to brush her teeth. She refused to open her mouth, and didn't want to use a "baby" toothbrush. We finally broke down and bought a vibrating SpongeBob brush (she has this weird fascination with him LOL) and she now wants to brush all day long.

Also, since she's quite a bit older, how about a prize if she does it consecutively for a week without you having to make her. Bribe her, I say!

Reply:Well siblings love doing it they pretty much annoy me because their trying to brush every hour. Try giving her flouridated water which is what we give them. And buy those yummy toothpastes. Like bubblegum flavor. I remember when I went to the dentist when I was small and he gave me bubblegum flavor mouthwash I couldnt wait to go again. Have a talk with your dentist and ask him what kind of kid friendly methods they have. And no sadly I dont know any movies but you can always get creative with it. Tell her stories of magical lands where their are toothbrush trees rivers of candy tasting mouthwash. Stuff like that you know? Make it fun for her. Take her down the hygeine aisle where they have toothbrushes and show her her favorite cartoon character toothbrushes. Or when shes watching tv tell her Dora says that big girls brush their teeth. it depends...in Canada they can make anywhere from like $25-$70 an hour. thats the range I've heard anyways. I'm in my last year of hygiene and I suggest that you dont do it for the money becuase you'll hate it. you need to get into hygiene becuase you really want to make a difference for people. as for what its really like...its tough...the schooling is very hard...I wont lie. if you want to get a feel for it though I suggest seeing if you can sit in at a office for a few hours and see whats its like.
Reply:Dental Hygiene is a great profession. You have to enjoy working with people and educating them on prevention and maintenance of oral diseases.

It is a very good idea to "shadow" a dental hygienist, and get an idea of what is involved.

I am currently a DH student and I will tell you that the course load is very heavy... there is way more to dental hygiene than "cleaning" teeth. Be sure that the school you are attending is accredited... or you may run into struggles after graduation.

I live in British Columbia, Canada and dental hygienists here make $40-$80/hour.

I moved from Seattle to Ohio for Hygiene school. I already had a degree in Zoology and my grades were okay. But I worked in a dental office for two years, which I think helped me getting into Hygiene school. My opinion is the amount of experience is the most important then grades. Keep up the grades. I went out of state because it very competitive in WA State. 4.0 GPA is not a guarantee in.

Reply:In Tucson, AZ is first come first serve to get in. There is about a 2-year wait after you complete all your prereq's. As for grades, they require a min. of C in each class (both in the prereq's and DH classes). No previous experience needed but it can be useful as assistants already know how to take/develop xrays, place sealants, make whitening trays, etc.

Getting into a program is getting harder and harder. There is a swelling applicant pool for most healthcare professions. Last year the mean acceptance into dental school was a 3.6 GPA. That's pretty competitive in my opinion. If you want to put the time into the schooling, dentistry is the way to go. If you dont want to spend the time and money, hygienists do quite well. Good luck.

Reply:Dental Hygiene Programs in my state require a 3.5 GPA and 21 ACT score. The interview and essay is not a picnic either. I doubt I'd have made it if I had to do it now. I've been a hygienist for 21 years and I do love helping people learn how to be healthier and smarter. My main complaint about the field is the lack of respect some dentists give us. If you do become a dentist instead of a hygienist I hope you will appreciate your hard working, money producing staff and let them know it. And.....don't make them ask you for a raise.

With either profession, you need to have strong math and science backgrounds. It is not hard if you stay focused and determined...it can be very brain numbing at times though...Good luck deciding.
Reply:Dental hygiene and dentist programs are both NOT easy. They are BOTH very hard to get into. It may take you years to get into a program. To be a dentist you need to most likely go to a 4 yr college first (major in a science) and then apply to a dental college. Dental college is also very expensive. To find out the local colleges for both programs check out the ADA.org website and search on there. They list all the colleges that have the programs.

Reply:I would think the salary would be the same or slightly less than any other dental assistant. I say less, because this is not as demanding as other positions in the office. It is just as important, but you don't need as many skills as you might for surgery or restorative procedures.

Yes, I believe it would. You may have to take an exam about the laws of that area. The licensing may require that you clean someones teeth at a dental school when they are giving the Board Exams. Here in the states it is only 1 time a year. The only way you might be exempt from this is if you had been practicing for several years. They may license you by credentials and recommendations.

They probably were even more interested in tongue scraping than modern society.

It's a good point that people didn't live nearly as long as we do today, so there was probably less dental disease to deal with. It's probably also valid to assume that the diet of a few hundred years ago (and earlier) was not so hard on teeth, due to the lack of refined carbohydrates.

You need to contact the local agency on dentistry to see if you can work. I don't know how England works, that is how it's districts are set-up. But in the states for example, there are federal rules (government) and then state rules. So for example a doctor that received their degree in the Philippines can't just come over to the states and practice medicine or dentistry. They have to take more courses and then a written "board" to become certified to practice. (I am just using the Philippines as an example) Different countries have education programs that differ, so what may be acceptable in Jordan to practice hygiene, may not be the same in England. You prob. can find a lot of useful info. on-line. It may take some time, but you should be able to find what you are looking for.

Someone else just posted a question like this and I answered them. (they also wanted to know what a typical day was like for a hygienist) I'm just going to copy and paste my other answer since it was long.

Hi. I've been a dental hygienist for more than 20 years and I'd love to answer your question. First, the qualities required are doing well in school, especially in the science areas, being able to communicate well with people from all walks of life, patience, a good attitude, and a strong desire to get through the very stringent dental hygiene program at your college. It's not an easy program at all, very difficult and that weeds out the people that aren't going to be able to pass their National and State Board exams. You have to really want this and then be tenacious and stay with it, do your very best at all times.

Our profession is not just about "scraping junk off teeth". We are concerned about the entire patient, not just the mouth. In college, you will be taught to take a patients vital statistics (temp., blood pressure, etc) and also to do a thorough intra and extra oral exam, feeling for swollen lymph nodes in the neck and jawline on the outside of the mouth (extra) and looking for signs of illness on the inside of the mouth (intra). I have, in my many years of experience, actually been the first person to alert a patient to suspicious skin cancerous lesions on the face/ears/neck, etc and also I have found many areas of cancer in the mouth too. You will learn how to diagnose many health conditions in the mouth as well as learn how the patients medical history affects how you will form his treatment Is he on blood thinners? You'll take pharmacology to learn about different medication the patients may be on and how that affect your treatment. Does he have a history of heart attacks? You will need to be prepared with your knowledge of CPR in case it's necessary and understand that the stress of a long dental appt. could pose a risk for such a patient) You will examine the patients mouth and determine their dental health, if there are areas of dental decay, you will chart these for the dentist to examine later. You will note gum problems and chart them also. You also will take 2 years of radiology in college to prepare you for the serious skill of exposing a patient to radiation when taking xrays. That's not something to be taken lightly and you must be very skilled at it so that you can get the xray right the first time. You don't want to expose a patient to any more radiation than is necessary. You will learn all about he various shapes of the teeth, the basic anatomy of the tooth structures so that you will be able to follow the shapes as you slip a very sharp metal instrument below the gumline and work where you can't see, only going by feel. Now do you see why I say it's not just about "scraping junk off teeth"? A huge part of your daily job is being a teacher, that's where the ability to communicate well comes in. You have to be personable enough to earn your patients trust as many patients are quite fearful of dental offices. You will have to explain what you are doing and why, which builds trust, and also teach them how to properly care for their own teeth with brushing and flossing. I believe that an educated patient is the best thing for both them and for me, so I do tell my patients everything I can and show them their xrays too.

The basic rundown on how I see a patient goes something like this: I first review their chart and bring myself up to speed on their ongoing dental health situations (have gum disease or fillings that haven't been filled yet, etc). I call my patient back to my room and go over their medical history with them to be sure nothing has changed since I saw them last. I ask if they are having any dental problems. If they are, we delve into that, asking their symptoms and many other specific questions. I take any necessary xrays and while they are developing, I lay the patient back and begin my intra-oral exam. I look over all the teeth and gums, all the tissues in the mouth also (for cancer or other diseases) and note in the chart any problems. I check the xrays for decay and calculus (tarter on the teeth). Sometimes I will stop and show the patient the xrays at this point to back up any treatment we need to do, otherwise I will wait til the end of the appt. Then I scale the teeth (cleaning with the sharp instrument) to remove any hard deposits on the teeth as well as plaque below the gumline. I then polish the teeth to remove stain and other surface plaque. I answer any questions the patient has, go over proper brushing and flossing, then the dentist comes and checks my charting to look over any problems I have noted.

I usually have either 30 or 45 min. per patient and that time include my setting up the room before and cleaning it afterwards.

Sometimes I also do sealants on children and have expanded duties that include anything the assistant can do and more (too many to list here) This is just general rundown of an average patient.

I love my job. It's a very fulfilling career for me to be able to get a "before" and "after" with each patient, getting to see how I've improved things for them in only a short time. It can be "gross" I suppose, you will deal with blood, spit, food debri, pus and bad odors too, so you have to be able to handle these things (I was in the medical field before changing careers). Hygienists get paid decent, not as much as folks think though. :) I don't feel guilty about earning my salary. I went to college for 5 years for my two degrees and I've paid my dues already. I also have to pay for my continuing education fees, license renewal fees and liability insurance. If you are really interested in this profession, I would recommend that you ask a hygienist if you could "shadow" her for a day at her job to see if it's the thing for you. It's not that hard to do the job, but it's not for everyone. There are

good days and bad days, just like any other jobs.

The classes aren't too bad, especially if you're good in science.

You just have to be organized and have good study habits.

Some patients are hard to work on and some are a walk in the

park. I wouldn't want to work full-time any more, it can be hard

on the back and the hands. I was getting symptoms of carpel-tunnel syndrome so I cut back to part time. I've worked for the

same guy for over 10 years,so I know most of my patients and

look forward to seeing them.

Also, you need to be licensed in each state you work in, so it's

probably not a good career for you if you're going to be moving

around a lot, like if your husband gets transferred all the time.

Most states only give the licensing exams 1 or 2 times a year, so

if you miss it, you wouldn't be able to take it again for a while,

and you wouldn't be able to work legally during that time.

What is your everyday dental hygiene procedure?
My dentist tells me the key to keeping cavities and gum disease away is to make sure I have as little bacterial plaque on my teeth as possible at all times. The longer the plaque sits on your teeth, the more uninterrupted time they have to rot away at your enamel and attack your gums.

So he recommended that I brush thoroughly (teeth, tongue and gums) after each meal, and before bed, using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and floss at least once a day.

People think I'm nuts for carrying around a toothbrush and toothpaste. But I have been following those recommendations for the past 10 years and haven't had a single cavity during that timespan, and my gums are in great shape too during my last checkup a couple months back.

Reply:I use the sonicare electric toothbrush! I use it for 2 minutes morning and night, floss with woven floss every night ( make sure you are flossing the right way- move the floss up and down the sides of your teeth) and massage my gums with a dry, soft bristle toothbrush. Concentrate on taking care of your gums, and your teeth will follow!

No - I'm in dental hygiene school right now. We have many former dental assistants in our class. They have valuable experience to help them in the course, but one must take all of the required courses to finish school. Hygiene Schools are doing their best to prepare you for the national boards and for your career, so it's best to take ALL of the courses anyways. If you have taken any basic pre-requisite courses such as Introductory Chemistry, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, and you are transfering into a Bachelors program, you may be able to transfer those credits. It all depends on your level of education.
Reply:From my experience--NO. Dental Hygiene classes are specific to hygiene concepts and instrumentation techniques. Though your experience as an assistant will help you in school, and some classes may be easier than others, there are many things that are very different and covered in more detail. No hygiene program would let you transfer courses because they are not the same. There is no way that you could know the information being covered in hygiene classes until you take them.

As a registered dental hygienist I can tell you that the program is rigorous. It can be difficult to get into a program, so it would be best to have excellent grades if you are in high school or some of your prerequisites taken already with excellent grades prior to applying for the program. The school I graduate from has 22 openings and typically about 200 applicants. Many of the students work or have families or significant others and still do it, but it is certainly easier if you aren't trying to work alot at the same time. My program was 5 days a week and this is pretty typical. In the US south there are programs that you don't need formal training which is called preceptorship and involves on the job training. Honestly, all of the Dr's I have worked with have been far too busy to have trained me, so I don't know if I would recommend that route. Before you care accepted to dental hygiene school there are certain pre-requisites that you must fulfill. These courses can be taken at a community college or a 4 year university, it usually takes two years to complete these courses, they include but are not limited to Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Biology I, Microbiology, Chemistry I, English I, History I, Algebra I, Speech Communications, Psychology, Sociology, and two electives. This varies on the state you live in. You will need to get online and go to the website of the school you wish to attend and they will have a list of the classes needed prior to being considered for the program.

You will need to consult the requirements of the school you wish to attend. I suspect so, however each school sets it's own admission requirements.

I typically brush twice a day, floss 5-6 per time, have a WaterPik (which is great), and use three different instruments when I brush: brush, tongue brush, and tongue scraper.

those in dental profession.....have you heard your hygienist saying "no such thing as over-flossing?" so what if you floss 5x. you're uncomfortable having food residue stuck in between your teeth, go for it it doesn't matter if you "over-floss" as long as you are doing a correct technique. Ask your hygienist to show you the proper technique as not to damage the periodontal ligament and gum. Tongue scraper is great especially for those who have a gagging reflex. I personally prefer using BreathRX scraper ( I am not an employee of Discus, happened that I like the product). It comes in two sides: 1. smooth side 2. rough side. You make your hygienist proud of you....At least somebody listens!

Health care research

Once in the program you take:

Dental radiology (x-ray)

Oral anatomy, embriology, and physiology

Theory (you have clinicals and see real patients)

Preventive dentistry

Periodonal

Head and neck anatomy

etc

Basically you learn a great wealth of knowledge that will assist you in making sound decision of disease causes, treatment options, and you will clinically learn the trade. You will be the one that cleans the teeth. The dental assistants assists the dentist during the procedures. Dental Hygiene requires more education, a degree, the passing of state/national boards and make a lot more $$$$! Good career choice, but requires a lot of hard work and smarts : ).

She looks in people's mouths and then she causes great pains.. After that she calls the dentist over to have a look see.

She also assists the dentist when he/she needs an assistant.

All in all, its not a bad way to make a living.
Reply:You will learn to clean teeth and administer local anethetic and nitrous, learn about dental health/disease, etc. It's generally challenging not unbearable though. If you can make it through the science classes that come before applying to hygiene school, you can handle it. The microbiology, anat/phys., chem. classes are all much harder.
Reply:That's the person who does the cleaning of the teeth that your sapossed to get every 6 months. I haven't done it but it doesn't appear to be very challenging. The training probably consists of learning the basics of dental studies and how to clean teeth. If that's your area of interest then go for it.

In my opinion the nursing program is the better option because you get to make a difference in people's lives. You will probably have to work 12 hour shifts with a number of days off, but depending on how much you want to work, you will definitely have time for a family. A woman I know just finished the program... she also just got married and is soon planning on having children. My dad who is a doctor tells me how he notices new nurses coming straight out of school, soon after that they get married and start having children. So, if they can do it, so can you...

Also, with nursing you are almost guaranteed of getting a job offer as soon as you finish the program because nurses are needed everywhere.

Nursing is also a high-paying job, but there is a long waiting list for most nursing jobs. (don't believe the hype that there is a nursing shortage, in reality there is a nursing surplus).

Reply:Wrong......from the previous 2 answers.......There are many Nursing Jobs Available in all states......there is a shortage of nurses everywhere......many many many hospitals r looking for nursing ad they Will pay you a great hire on bonus between 5,000-10,000.................once you get a nursing degree you can start making between 5,000-7,000 a month working 3 days a week........

A dental hygienist starting pay is between 2,000-4,000 a month......it is very hard to find a job in this field...

You can try using pro-biotic yogurts, but if you have an ulcer the bad breath is associated with this, and sometimes all it requires is a course of antibiotics due to a bacteria that causes the ulcer.

Is the dental hygiene program very competitive to get into?
The dental hygiene program to become a registered dental hygienist is a two year program and is a difficult program to get into where I live. They are usually limited to 20-25 students. You have to have a prerecquisite of chemistry,algebra and health. The first yr along w/your other classes (English, A%26amp;P, Speech) you have the dental classes including Head %26amp; Neck Anatomy, Pharmacology, Radiology, Clinic - where you practice on each other. The colleges around here usually divide the class into a few just out of high school, some w/some college already and "older" people who want to get back into the work force. My class started w/20. At the end of the first yr we were 14 - those who left the program were all the young students under 25. Its not an easy program. If you are considering it I would suggest that you get all the classes you can out of the way before you enter the program. Where I live there is a 4 yr waiting list. So, apply early. At the end of the program you have to take National Boards (one day of testing), a clinical test (they tell you what area to scale then stand there and watch you) and the third is a radiology exam where you have to ID different xrays and gross looking abnormalities. OK - I told you the way to get to put the initials RDH behind your name - here's the good part. There are many job opportunities - both in private practice and public health. You can pretty much make your own hours/#days you work. You're in your own operatory so theres a certain amount of privacy and you get to know your patients pretty well. Oh yeh, you do have to take continuing education to keep your license up to date. Each state is different when it comes to the # of hrs you have to complete. The best part of all is the money is GREAT! You have a lot of responsibility but the benefits are great. In this area the new hygienists that just graduated are starting at $25-32 hr. The requirements may vary from program to program. The best advice is to contact the various programs that you are interested in and set up a meeting with the doctor over the program. well right now I am enrolled in college to receive a Associate degree in dental assisting and I believe if you want to become a dentist you have to get a Bachelors degree or masters degree and it requires 2 years of generals (pre-requisites) and 4-6 years of specializing in dentistry. Courses would include learning about head and neck anatomy, circulatory system, nervous system, dentition terms and anatomy, diseases, administering medications...there is a lot of education involved in becoming a dentist. Most colleges have an outline of the exact courses you would be taking if you were enrolled. I know it takes a lot of dedication to education and the work load is extreme, most people do not have a job throughout their learning process.

Hands down, dental hygiene!! I've been a dental hygienist for 18 years and have never regretted it. The salary and benefits are great for a 2 year degree and you can choose your hours which is not as easy in nursing. I know many nurses just starting out have to work nights and holidays. That never happens with d. hygiene. I work 4 days weekly now but have worked as little as 2 days when my son was small. I've worked for the same dentist for 12 years--many of my patients are old friends now. It is very gratifying to help patients maintain their dental health and spend time with them also. Many patients share their personal lives and thoughts as well. So you get to spend time with other adults and earn money as well. When you have small children, I know how important that can be!!

Reply:The best option in your situation is to get a ADN degree (two year Nursing degree). I was once a Nursing student, but it's so competitive at a four year college, it's crazy. They only have a few slots open for about 200+ students applying, and that number depends on the school you attend. Try not to get too attached to your patients, because you don't want your emotions to get in the way of your work. It's a rewarding experience, believe me, and if you don't want to do the two year program, you can do the LPN program at a nearby community college, which takes only a year. CNA programs are also available, and if you don't have any money for school, you can check into certain scholarships, grants, or loans (if you want). Good luck and best wishes to you :)

Pretty much anything in the medical area unless it is in an assistants position is a good bet.

If you are looking at additional options, look into X-ray tech and respiratory therapist. RN is also a good area too.

Dental Hygiene is a hard program to get into, but once your graduate, your opportunities are good. You can always check to see what type of placement services the school that you will be going to offer. Where I am applying, for dental hygiene, one of the instructors is part owner in a placement agency for dental employees.

Being realistic, dental hygiene has always been my first choice, but I have also checked into both the x-ray tech and respiratory therapists requirements as options too. So far, my preliminary school work is good for all three and I would only have a few additional classes to take if I were to change my mind.

I am a dental hygienist. There are some good and bad things to consider. All start with the bad: 1. most offices do not give health insurance as a benefit, because there are only a few people in private offices. individual insurance is high. 2. if you don't take care of your body, you can end up with backpain. I prevent this by going to a Chiro and massage every week. 3. Constantly being overlooked and underappreciated in the public. Many people don't know what a hygienist is, but that all falls to educating patients.

The good: 1. I get paid approx. 35-37 dollars an hour. I work 3 and a half days. 2. The dentist's office is great I love working with high tech paperless systems and digital xrays. 3. I am not cube dweller material, I love that I get to have control over my area of treatment. I get to involve myself in my patients lives. 4. I love the fact that I help people stay healthy. I have the potential to save lives from disease and cancer. 5. I don't have to get dolled up in uncomfortable clothes (scrubs rock!) 6. Everywhere I go I know people have teeth, so I will always have a job somewhere. Even when I do not practice hygiene when older, I know, that I can use my education to teach, sell dental products, public health, consultant work etc.

For most schools you have to go to a two year college and take the required prerequisites. Then you can apply to a two year Dental Hygiene program. Once you've completed the program you have to take your Boards examinations.

But if looking into someones nasty dirty mouth, who does not brush properly, full of rotten teeth broken teeth, puss filled teeth, would bother you then dont do it. In hygeine you have to scrap hardened plaque off the teeth and under the gumline. It is pretty gross sometimes and bloody. but usully the majority are pretty decent. Also it is very repetative. All you do all day long is scale (scrape) and polish. Thats it. Thats why i chose assisting. more variety. No two are the same. But downside, is the pay is less. You make doulbe by doing hygeine. All in all I love it, but if you get grossed out easy then it is not for you. Also you are bent over all day long so your back, neck, and shoulders will always hurt.

Reply:Yes hygiene school was hard - long days of classes with tons of homework - high pressure to find patients with the right degree of difficulty and the possibility of failing clinic just because your patient chose not to show up. A very stressfull time and also a stressful profession - Dentists keep saying that they need more production but when your schedule is full there is a limit to how much can be billed in an hour. Is dental hygiene school really hard?
I was going to first get my degree in dental hygiene, but decided since here (in california) it is extremely hard to even get into the program. So I decided to go for dental assisting, get my pre-req's in dental hygiene, and work as a dental assistant until I am accepted into a dental hygiene program.

When I started the dental assisting program, we had a class lunch with all the dental hygiene students. We asked them all the same questions that you asked above.

The hardest thing about going into a dental hygiene program is that without previous experience in a dental office, it made the program 10 times more hard, you are basically learning what dental assistants have to do and dental hygienist have to do at the same time, whereas if you were already a dental assistant then you have a definite advantage over the people that don't know anything about dentistry.

They teach you about morphology, and structure of teeth and surrounding structure of teeth. I know they get way more into then they do in dental assisting. I don't know exactly everything that they teach you, but if you find an accredited school you can look up the program schedule for dental hygiene and see what classes you would be taking.

I know that the number of students accepted a year in dental hygiene at Sacramento City College are 27 seats. The amount of returning students for the second year was less then half that. So somewhere around 12 students came back. Obviously this program is serious, but if you put your mind to it then you can definitely pass!

I know one of the biggest problems for students failing is working while being in this program. So if you plan on going into dental hygiene just plan ahead so you don't have to work as well.

The benefits of dental hygiene are wonderful. You get great pay and flexible hours. Sacrificing two years for this isn't anything to what it could bring you in the future! Just remember they always say that dental hygienist naturally have to be anal, and like to work independently. They are ususally very structured and orderly.

I hope if you are interested in it you will definitely think about doing it, but always think about doing assisting first, it would be a horrible thing to go into hygiene and have to fail!

Also, if you are able to go into a program anywhere in your state or in another state, it will open your chances greatly for getting in. I do know that some tech colleges (Western Career College in CA) are starting to incorporate dental hygiene into there programs, but if there hygiene program is anything like there assisting program I would run as far away from it as possible, I have heard tons of horrible stories about assistants that go through programs and don't know anything about assisting, as well as teachers be lazy on the job!!!

It's hard to say. Need more info. on the work you need done. Not only that, but all area's charge different prices.

Your best bet is to go to the dentist. He/She should give you an oral exam and a full mouth series of x-rays to diagnose any problems.

Usually a consult will be free if you plan on having the work done at that office. A consult will consist of presenting your treatment plan to you, going over it (to make sure you understand why the work needs to be done), and also to discuss payment options. The office I work in (like many offices) has an intraoral camera which takes still frames of problem areas. This is a great way to show patients that work is necessary!

As a dental assistant....I feel obligated to let you know that oral hygiene is important! It not only effects your mouth....it can cause other damage to your body. Brush atleast twice a day and floss once a day. That is a start....b/c after having alot of work done in your mouth....you want to keep it that way.

There are scholarships for dental hygiene. Most of the tuition reimbursement places are large companies or the state or federal governments in certain key fields. The individual college or university should have a list of scholarships for dental hygiene, too. I love my career and have been a RDH for 15 years. It is pretty rewarding and you never know what your day is going to be like. If you like people and are interested in the medical field it is great. I have a Mom and a sister that are nurses and end up working nights, holidays and weekends at the hospital they are at, while I rarely work holidays and only one 1/2 day Saturday a month. You can get your degree in 2 years (for an associate's) or 4 years (for a bachelor's), but in general it can be tough to get into the programs. There are usually jobs to be had and the pay is great. As a dental hygienist I am trained to teach people how to care for and maintain their teeth. I not only clean teeth, but educate, give injections, discuss periodontal disease and treat it, locate any abnormalities such as oral cancer and lesions for the dentist to look at and diagnose, take x-rays and assess bone levels and susp. areas that look like decay, talk to people about their treatment plans and the best course of action, discuss insurance and what it will pay for and what it won't, maintain my instruments by sterilizing and sharpening them, taking impressions for bleaching trays and temporary crowns, placing and removing temporary crowns, placing orthodontic elastics and wire maint., ......the list is long and I love it. Everyday is different and no two patients are ever alike. I act as a co-therapist to the dentist by giving the treatment that he rec.d's and is within my scope of practice. Many times my doc looks to me for my opinion about the best course of action to take with someones dental hygiene, such as, how long do I think the treatment will take, the probable outcome of a certain treatment, etc. Many times I will numb his patients up before he starts a procedure or set-up the nitrous so patients can be comfortable during the procedure. A dentist is the one who diagnoses and does the actual restorative or cosmetic work. Together we give the best possible care to our patients.

Reply:It's easier to explain what a hygienist does first. A hygienist cleans teeth. Their field relates to the gums both in treatment and diagnosis. They are not trained much in identifying decay and other oral pathology. They are very important but simply cannot do as much as the dentist. They cannot remove decay, remove teeth, treatment plan dentures or partials among other things. By cleaning teeth (a time consuming procedure), the hygienists allow the dentists to move on to other patients.

As for salary...if your asking for it (can't tell if u are?) A hygienist makes roughly between $24-$40 per hour. Dentists vary more.. averaging around $60-$80 per hour. Yearly salaries range between 60k to over a million per year.

I am a Dental Hygienist and I make good money but it is true that there's a cap and that's it. I've also noticed that those who do this mainly for the money get burned out real fast and end up hating their jobs. Then what are you trained for? Nothing else!

It is rewarding for me because you help people not only with Dental health but with their over all health since DR's have related gum disease to heart attacks and strokes.

One good thing also is you can work part time, have a family and make good money. Bad thing also is little to no benefits.

Fashion Merchandising does sound much more exciting!

Possibly a difference in starting salary. There is high demand for dental hygienists so you would have a high chance of getting a job out of school. As far as which degree to go for...that's a personal decision. I would go for Associate's.

Reply:I've known (and dated) people in both these fields, and each has its own burdens and rewards. The world of vets is very rewarding, especially for animal lovers. Animals are great patients. They don't cancel appointments or complain about their treatments. But that profession doesn't pay especially well, and dealing with the unpleasant side of that work can be a drain. Dental hygiene can be lucrative, but in my experience, it is really, really BORING. Some people seem to thrive on it, but more often than not, people wish they'd done something more rewarding, where they could feel they've made a real difference. Overall, I'd say follow your passion!
Reply:i went to college to be a nursing assistant. its not what i thought it would be at all. i really hate it sometimes to tell you the truth. people are REALLY nasty and mean sometimes. and your going to be in a dentist office...people already have fear of the dentist so your already starting off bad. i have a friend who is in that field and she has told me some horror stories..one time some bad *** kid was in and was acting up..he kept bitting and fighting with my friend..it was really bad. on the other hand I love animals really more than humans. i would of loved to be in that field anything with animals. just think their helpless and so inconnent. they dont talk back really no problems at all.if you really love animals then you should help them out. its a real statsyfing job knowing you helped save a little puppy or kitty from death or abuse.
Reply:I am a dental hygienist and would highly recommend it. I am now a stay home mom and I do some fill in work whenever I want. There is a high demand for the fill in work and it gives you great options if and when you become a mom. I worked full time for five years and really enjoyed it. You also have the option to work part time or full time. Full time is usually four days. Most dentist are closed on Friday. I loved having Fridays off. I think of the two careers, dental hygiene has more flexibility. As for as school goes, it is tough but when you get into the clinicals, it is a lot of fun. Good luck
Reply:Hello. I have to tell you I just quit my job as a vet assist. after 4yrs. It was really difficult work. Working with animals can be rewarding but more often then not I had to work with animals that were aggressive or not well trained and there was a real physical danger. Also being possibly exposed to rabid animals is something you have to think about. It is my opinion that the pay in this field is not worth the risks you take. Not only that but sometimes that job was just plain disgusting. Urine, excriment, blood, parasites are all things you have to deal with on a continual basis. Hope I have given you some insite and good luck in whichever field you choose!

Dentistry. Nursing is killer hours, and horrible conditions. Do you want to give a 90 year old guy a bath?

No.

Dentistry is easier, pays about the same, and is more rewarding than nursing for these reasons:

People don't die infront of you/around you.

If you make a mistake, it's not fatal... unless it's some HUGE mistake... so there's less pressure.

The hours ARE better.

I'd suggest asking a dentist and a nurse about their jobs... you'll see.

You can always work with children in dentistry too.

The nursing studies will take longer and be more rigorous but the pay is higher, the benefits better, and you can advance to RN or Nurse Practitioner and did you know that nurses don't pay into unemployment insurance because there is always work for nurses. Children should visit the dentist early generally around ate 2 1/2 -3. Hopefully there is no work that needs to be done other than a cleaning, however, this visit and subsequent regular visits allow the child to become familiar with the office and equipment, permit the dental professionals to monitor the mouth and teeth as they erupt and allow for early referral to specialists should that be necessary. If you wait until the child has clearly visible cavities they have probably been suffering from toothache for ages. Also decay in primary teeth can (not necessarily will) affect the development of the adult teeth. Primary teeth can abcess if decay is left untreated.

We hear regularly about people who have had traumatic experiences in dental offices, one way to avoid this is to have children become comfortable in the environment before we have to actually do any major work.

Depending on the child some of those primary teeth may still be around until early teenage years and in some cases some adult teeth may be congenitally missing and we have to take heroic measures to keep the primary teeth in the mouth for many more years if not forever. Hence you can see it is important to keep those baby teeth clean and healthy.
Reply:milk teeth can still rot and a dentist can put some protective coating over the rotting tooth so it doesn't go any further. My nephew had foul teeth some rotted to the gum but his adult teeth could not be more perfect. Dentists do not remove rotting milk teeth anymore because they keep the space for the adult up and coming tooth. He needs you to brush his teeth properly at the very least once nightly and no snakcs after brushing, sleeping with food on your teeth is worse than anything for teeth.

I'm a hygienist in the state of Mississippi. What degree you have does not matter in terms of salary in a clinical setting. It is taken into consideration if you decide to take your career in a different direction such as teaching.

I have been working in a dental lab for 12 years now. It isn't for everyone because it can be quite tedious, but If you enjoy art work this is a decent job. The laboratory field is estimating 11,000 people retiring or leaving the job in the next 7 years with only 1,400 replacements which translates into job security. Once you get your skills down, you could try to open your own lab which if done properly, could make you rich. You would need to get a certification called a CDT (Certified Dental Technician) in most states though. Overall I love the job as every case is different posing new challenges. Good Luck.

Personally, I would choose dental hygiene. I enjoy patient interaction, so working as a lab tech making things for patients that I would never meet would not be as rewarding for me as working with a patient face-to-face. I definitely enjoy clinical work more than lab work (I find it tedious), so it would be hygiene for me!

An associate's degree is much more valuable and actually a technical degree is not accepted or offered in many states! If you can do a bachelor's degree to begin with that would be best, but the pay for now won't be different if you have an associates instead of a bachelor's.

I'm really confused as to which i should go to, a 2-year or 4-year school. Is it a HUGE pay difference? Also...I have great grades in all of my classes, but micro...I got a C. Do schools look down on that? I'm thinking about joining Southwestern College in San Diego...but they except only 36 students a year. Do you have any recommendations as to what I should do to higher my chance of getting in?? (Joining clubs...re-taking classes...letters of recommendations??). Thanks!!
